Upright Memorials

An upright monument is a type of grave marker that stands above the ground on a base and foundation. Upright monuments are the most common type of cemetery memorial. They are typically made of granite, but can also be made of marble.

Upright monuments are made up of two pieces: the tall, upright monument, called the die, and the low-lying flat granite base. The die is usually 24 inches tall, 8 inches thick, and 20 inches wide, but can be custom made to any size.

Upright monuments are placed on a base for stability and to protect the monument from debris when the grass around the grave is cut.

Slant Memorial

Slant monuments, or “slanted memorials” are simply short grave marker tablets with a slanted face, and like upright tablets must sit on a foundation, usually with a granite base. A 2″ flat area on the front of a slant monument is called “nosing”, and can be polished or rock-pitched.

Flat Marker

A flat grass monument, also known as a flush marker or grass marker, is a type of grave marker that lies flat on the ground at the head of a grave. Flat markers are the most common type of cemetery monument and are usually made of a single piece of granite that is three to four inches thick. They are typically rectangular in shape because of cemetery regulations.
